"Where will Cuyahoga County build its first solar farm?"
Cuyahoga County expects to decide within 60 days where to build a solar farm that will help power 17 county-owned buildings.
The actual electrons generated by the solar farm won't be the same ones that turn on the lights for the county, but instead will feed the portion of the grid operated by Cleveland Public Power that will deliver the electricity to the buildings.
The farm is part of Cuyahoga County Council's effort to promote locally generated green energy with the hope that it will be bring manufacturing jobs to the region along with the clean power.
As part of its plan, council has also agreed to buy a portion of the electricity that would be generated by an offshore wind farm being planned for Lake Erie. The Icebreaker demonstration project would include six turbines placed eight to 11 miles north of Cleveland harbor.
The county intends to begin construction on the solar farm next year, said Michael Wise, a McDonald Hopkins attorney that is advising the county on the solar power project.
